Mentor's Guide

How to fill in your profile

ile has 3 main elements:

  1. Pitch
  2. Specialization
  3. Experience

Here they are:

Pitch

Pitch is a short description that you can find on your profile page, on the Mentors show-case and in blog posts.

You should write here something that will lure the students in. Jokes are allowed.

Limitations: 180 characters min, 220 max.

Specialization

Specializations are separate blocks that describe what a mentor is good at, what they specialize in, as a professional. Students will check specializations to get an idea of what the mentor knows about.

You choose and fill in your specializations here:

You find a specialization in "Available specializations". Write in a description.

Click "Edit" to edit a description.

It's important:

When you describe a specialization, you don't actually describe the specialization itself, you talk about yourself, your experience in this field and what you can teach in that specialization. You write in first person.

Correct:

Wrong:

It's important, because on the specialization page a student will see all the mentors with this specialization, and will choose their mentor based on this description. So you need to write there what a client needs to see: why this mentor is better then others, what will they learn, what technologies are used (for example, some use React for SPA and others use Angular).

Limitations: 140 characters min, 190 max.

Experience

This is where you write about your professional experience. Free form. But it is useful to have some kind of structure: a list or something similar. Links are also useful.
You write in first person.

To describe your experience, you need to fill in this box editing your profile:

It's important:

In the Experience section do not use additional headings.

It is forbidden to write in the Experience section anything that is not related to your professional experience. Limitations are listed below.

There are no character limitations, but longreads are not recommended.

Limitations

Character limitations:

Nobody likes to read a lot of stuff. So we've added at least some character limitations. Otherwise, trying to tell more about themself, a mentor can do more harm than good, as nobody will actually read it. This is why you need to be brief and on point.

Users will rely on your texts to choose a mentor. So you need them to be short to be read.

Heading limitations

Don't use additional headings because it is confusing for users, and also it messes up with search engine bots.

Content limitations:

Do not fill your profile with anything but information bout yourself and your experience. Even if you really want to put your demands, working hours, principles - just don't do it. There are 3 reasons for that:

  1. All the mentoring hours and principles will be decribed in full on special pages dedicated to them. They are all the same to every mentor. Those pages will also include that the schedule is discussed again with every student personally.
  2. Trying to structure your process uniformly goes against the very idea of individual mentorship. Your schedule, demands and starting levels, the format itself - all of that is discussed with every new student personally. The mentor adapts to the student and not the other way around.
  3. Individual mentorship is still relatively new on the market and users have many questions. It's good for us for them to ask those questions, as it allows us to put them on a sales pipeline. It might be useful for a user to understand everything they will get beforehand. On the other side, it is better for them to ask, because an engaged student studies better. And we still can't explain everything to the user, cause every case is unique.
